Choosing to buy an electric taxi is a great choice in today’s market. With new EV charging stations popping up across the country, major companies striking deals and even taxi only charging points for black cab drivers, the future looks greener in the UK than ever before.
Launch of EV Chargers at M & S
The Marks and Spencer store at Maidstone Eclipse Park in Kent is the first store to get an electric vehicle rapid charging station. The store is located just off J7 of the M20 motorway. Three new 50kw chargers have been installed by BP Chargemaster which feature different connectors for each type of electric vehicle and a handy contactless payment system. This is the first store to receive the charging dock as part of a 5-store trial for the company.
Greene King Chain Strike UK-wide Deal
Pub retailer Greene King has also recently partnered with Drive Energi to install EV chargers across many of their pubs, restaurants and hotels across the UK. They’ve agreed a deal until 2040 where Drive Energi will install and run one of the UK’s largest networks of retail charging stations.
The first location has still to be confirmed but it’s expected to be available in the North West region by the end of this year. The wider roll–out plan will see 300 stations installed over the next two years. The deal provides the country with the crucial infrastructure and strengthens the government’s commitment to supporting green technologies.
James Moat, CEO of Drive Energi says: “We are committed to the roll-out of accessible public charging across the UK and drivers can expect to charge from over 300 Drive Energi locations by the end of 2021.”
BP Chargemaster Taxi
In London, black cab drivers can take advantage of BP Chargemaster Taxi, the EV charging network established by Transport for London (TfL). The network consists of rapid charge points and payments can be made via a contactless credit or debit card for pay-as-you-go customers. BP Chargemaster Taxi charge points are only available to licenced taxi drivers. To find a charging station near you simply access the app called ‘Zap-map’ and select the filter ‘Taxi Use Only’. The app can show you the nearest charging point and whether it’s available or currently in use.
