Nottinghamshire cab drivers have come through with flying colours after a series of random inspections on taxi and private hire vehicles.
Mansfield District Council’s taxi licensing team were out in force for a day of spot checks on hackney and private hire taxis, in a bid to ensure that taxis are up to standard and safe for passengers and drivers alike.
With the help of the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), Nottinghamshire Police, Ashfield District Council and Bolsover District Council, checks were completed on a total of 16 vehicles.
Safety First
Each vehicle underwent a full check-up at the Hermitage Lane depot. Checking the engine, brakes, tyres, and condition of the bodywork and also to ensure they were following regulations by carrying a first aid kit and fire extinguisher. Taxi meters were also checked to ensure they were charging the correct prices for fares and to look for any tamper signs. Nottinghamshire Police checked that each vehicle had adequate taxi insurance.

Chairman of the Mansfield District Council Licensing Committee, Councillor John Smart, said: “The council takes public safety very seriously. In order to fulfil their licensing conditions, taxis and private hire vehicles have to be maintained to a high standard. These spot checks give the council the opportunity to ensure that operators are complying with our rigorous safety standards. It is very encouraging to see that all 16 of the taxi and private hire vehicles passed the inspection.”
