Things are looking up for York taxi operators as the City Council has revealed plans to re-open a rank in St Sampson’s Square, more than two decades after it was scrapped by York Council chiefs.
The proposal by council officials came in response to protests by York cabbies following the creation of 15 extra taxi plates in the city a couple of years ago and the late-night closure of a rank in Duncombe Place.
The proposed new taxi rank would provide spaces for nine vehicles and operate on two sides of the square from 8pm until 6am.
Steve Galloway, the council’s executive member for city strategy, said the new taxi rank would help to improve conditions for taxi drivers.
