An introductory training course has been hailed a great success by new taxi drivers in Sheffield.
220 and Counting
Over 220 students have now completed the week-long course, run by Sheffield College. Entitled: ‘Introduction to the role of the professional taxi and private hire driver’ the course covers nine units including the law, passenger safety, taxi maintenance and disability awareness. This includes loading wheelchairs into specified wheelchair accessible vehicles and making sure new drivers are fully aware the importance of allowing guide dogs into their cabs.
Course graduate Mohammed Miah, 38, said: “I found the course very informative and useful”.
Disability Access
“I’ve recently started working for Mercury cabs and the knowledge I have gained has already enabled me to help a wheelchair passenger with confidence.”
Councellor Clive Skelton, deputy chair of the council’s licensing committee, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that the scheme has been so successful.
“All people have the right to be able to access all transport services in the city and this course will ensure that all our taxi drivers have the ability to deal with any fare”.
