What is the Semiconductor Crisis?
The shortage of semiconductors began in 2020 when lockdowns began and there was an increased demand for computers, tablets and smartphones. This demand initially diverted supply away from the automotive industry. Ford was hit particularly hard by this and closed several of its factories in 2021. The manufacturers then grappled to secure deals with electronic suppliers to ensure a consistent supply for building cars.
Nissan expects the shortages to be felt across the industry until the middle of this year. Chief operating officer Ashwani Gupta said “The pandemic has really disrupted the supply chain around the world and the automotive industry has been impacted much more than expected. It will take some more time to get back to normal operations.”
