Leicestershire Police has released an appeal for anyone who may have any information of the whereabouts of three yobs who committed an assault on a private hire car driver in Leicester city centre.
The 45-year-old driver unsuspectingly picked up his attackers, three male and one female, just before 3am on Sunday 2nd February in Church Gate. Shortly after they entered the vehicle they shouted racial comments at the driver.
One of the men then threatened him with a knife while another man got out of the cab, opened the drivers’ door, removed the key from the ignition and punched him in the face.
The driver was then dragged form his cab. However, fortunately, he managed to break free and alerted two police officers who were on the beat nearby.
By the time back-up was on its way, the thugs had fled from the scene.
Plea from Police
PC Nick Golden, Leicestershire Police, said: “This was a despicable crime against a man who was going about his daily business and trying to earn a living.
“No one should be subjected to an attack of this nature, especially in their place of work.
“We need to catch those responsible and would urge anyone who witnessed the incident or has heard rumours about who may be responsible to contact us.”
The driver has been able to give a clear and detailed description of two of his attackers and police are hopeful that the public will be able to help with their enquiries.
PC Nick Golden commented: “It’s believed the suspects came from the direction of the Clock Tower and were with a woman and another man who have all been described as being in their mid 20s.
“If you recall any aspect of the incident then please contact us. Any calls received will be treated in confidence.”
Attacker Description
All of the attackers were described as white. One of the men is said to be 20-25 years-old, short brown hair, clean-shaven, wearing a long sleeved cream top, around 5ft tall and of slim build.
Another male involved has been described as being 25-26 years-old, 6ft tall, slim build, with brushed forward short brown hair, stubble on his face and wearing a black jacket.
