A proposal to introduce a new taxi awards scheme has been released for public consultation by Rochdale Borough Council. The move comes as part of a wider initiative to further improve private hire trade standards throughout the borough.
Star Drivers
Private hire drivers could earn themselves a bronze, silver or gold star depending on how well they score in the in the Council’s appraisals. Points can be accrued by adhering to an array of standards put forward by the Council. Examples include a daily inspection of vehicles before each shift; providing the correct support where necessary in wheelchair accessible taxis; and overall good customer service skills from both drivers and operators.
Conversely, points can also be deducted for drivers not complying with licensing regulations, operators employing unlicensed drivers or not dealing with customer complaints promptly and efficiently.
Best in the Business
The hope is that drivers and operators will strive to be the best in the borough, with awards being displayed in the cabs as proof of their excellent service.
Stephen Campbell, of Heywood-based firm Car 2000, said: “These changes will bring the trade up-to-date. Oldham Council already run a similar star-based scheme and this will really raise the standards for firms across the borough.
“Our customers can be assured that we’ll be aiming for the gold award and providing a transparent service for our customers.”

Councillor Jacqui Beswick, Rochdale Borough Council Member for Licensing and Regulation, said: “It’s vital that taxi drivers adhere to the highest standards because passenger safety is of paramount importance.
“These proposals will help ensure that our private hire drivers are the best in the business and should help customers make an informed decision about who they travel with. I’d encourage everyone to get involved in the consultation and let us know their views.”
The consultation will end at midnight on 26 January, before a final decision is made by the council’s cabinet.
