Oxford Taxi Firm Offers Free Travel to Cancer Patients

04/07/2014

Caring Oxford based private hire car firm, Alpha Cars, has agreed to provide a free taxi service to the local cancer support centre.

The Hummingbird Centre

The Hummingbird Centre, which provides respite for cancer patients, is a registered charity and opened its doors in March this year.  Hard working owners of the centre, Mechelle Harris and Rebecca Fletcher, say they will have to raise £1,000 every month to keep the centre afloat.

Mum-of-two, Mrs Fletcher said:  “We’re not taking a salary; we’re putting in our own time and money to support this, to get it off the ground and make it a success.

“There’s nowhere for patients to go. We want people to have a therapeutic treatment and get to know other people going through the same frightening experience that they’re going through.”

Big Hearted Taxi Firm Owner Happy to Help

When Alpha Cars manager, Dawn McKenzie, found out about the new centre, she was amazed by the hard work that was being put into the set-up and jumped at the chance to lend a hand.

Ms Mackenzie said: “In this office people have lost friends and loved ones to cancer and it’s a charity close to our hearts.

“Our drivers are happy to do this type of thing. We’re a big company now and are able to offer a service like this. We want to do what we can to make their lives a little bit easier.

“We’ve got the people, even if six or seven cars are needed – we can go out and do it.  It’s really humbling and has put a smile on our faces to be able to help.”
