A proposal for two new taxi ranks in Holmfirth, in the Kirklees district of Yorkshire, has been given the go ahead despite objections from three local Councillors.
Kirklees Council has agreed that there will be temporary hackney taxi ranks positioned at Victoria Square and at Victoria Street. The operating hours for these ranks will be 8pm to 2am, seven days a week.
Taxi Needs
Amjad Nadeem, Kirklees Hackney Carriage Association secretary, supported the decision. Mr. Nadeem said: “The key point is that Holmfirth is a bustling town and the provision for taxis at the bus station is not sufficient.
“There are just two spaces there and at night time it’s not where people will look for a taxi. The taxi rank has never been updated or expanded, but in recent years there have been more restaurants and bars open late, there are gigs at the Picturedrome and there are not enough taxis to take people home.”
Oposing the move, Councillor Nigel Patrick commented: “Making unlawful parking lawful is just the wrong way to go about it. The residents are going to have noise problems seven days a week.”
Despite some negative comments and objections from some councillors, the plans we’re passed with seven votes to two.
