Guildford Borough Council recently announced a change in policy that would see all hackney taxis turn turquoise.
Distinguishing Between Hackney Taxis and PHV’s
The council’s reasoning for this decision, which it claims is based on the views of the general public, is to make hackney taxis and private hire cars more distinguishable for safety reasons.
“It’ll essentially be paid for by our passengers and result in a poorer quality of vehicle being used.”
However, the decision has not been taken lightly by the trade which has branded the move “impractical”. The chairman of the Guildford Hackney Association, David Williams-Wynn, has proceeded with a complaint to the South West Surrey Magistrates Court with the preliminary hearing due to be held on January 26th.
Secretary of the Guildford Hackney Association, Mark Rostron, said: “We’re objecting to the proposal that we should have our vehicles clad in impractical, unattractive turquoise as it’ll essentially be paid for by our passengers and will result in a poorer quality of vehicle being used.
“The court hearing has been set so hopefully the council will see sense and not further waste public money.
“In the meantime, drivers are left not knowing what to do about vehicles which need replaced and the council seem unable to give them any proper guidance.”
Guildford Borough Council has said that it will subsidise 25% of the costs incurred in wrapping the taxis but Mr Rostron claims that it’s not enough and feels that the cost will only be filtered through to customers by means of a fare increase.
Council Response
A spokesman for Guildford Borough Council said: “We’ve consulted for nearly two years on the policy changes, which showed public support for the concept of having clearly identifiable Guildford taxis.
“In this case, the council has adopted the new policy and drivers have two years to ensure their vehicles meet the livery requirements.
“We’re holding the next meeting of the Taxi Advisory Group on January 21st at 7pm. The new livery and training requirements will be discussed and members of the trade are welcome to attend so that any questions they may have can be answered.”
