A private hire driver from Hull has been praised for his quick thinking after diverting traffic when he spotted an injured young girl lying in the middle of the road in the early hours of the morning.
The Accident
On the 20th of May at around 5:30am, 65 Cars driver, Colin Peachman, was taking a customer to, global technology firm, Smith & Nephew when he saw a body lying on the road at Rawling Way.
He immediately stopped his car and went over to find Stephanie Rosenquest upset, scared and in pain.
Mr Peachman said: “As I was approaching the roundabout I saw a lass on the road. I pulled over and told my customer that I needed to check if she was ok.
“There was another chap with her who I believe to be the driver who hit her. I asked him if he’d phoned 999 but he was foreign and didn’t understand me.”
Hit and Run
24 year old Miss Rosenquest told of how she’d been on cycling to her early morning shift at Princes Quay shopping centre when she was hit by a mint green Peugeot vehicle. She was hurled up into the air before bouncing onto the car bonnet and landing on the road and claims that the driver of the car fled the scene but later returned to tell her to “get up”.
The man disappeared and Mr Peachman called 999. He then took it upon himself to divert the traffic away from the scene to stop any further injuries.
He said: “I didn’t want anyone else to run over her while she was on the road.
“She was upset so I made sure I rang her partner to tell him what had happened and I also rang her work. I stayed with her until the paramedics arrived.
“I guess I was in the right place at the right time; I couldn’t leave her lying on the road.”
Paramedics took Miss Rosenquest to Hull Royal Infirmary where she received treatment for severe bruising to her lower back as well as cuts and bruises to her head and face.
Miss Rosenquest’s brother, Dan, commented: “Stephanie and all the family cannot thank the driver enough. If he hadn’t diverted traffic and made people aware of Stephanie lying in the middle of the road it could have very well been a different story.
“We received a phone call telling us that Stephanie had been run over and we were in absolute bits. She could have lost her life; things could have been so different.”
Making a Recovery
Miss Rosenquest is now doing well and recovering at home with her family in Hull.
Dan commented: “She’s been off work for a week and is scared to get back on her bike, but hopefully in time everything will be ok and she’ll get back to her usual self.”
