A man who attacked an elderly cab driver in Motherwell has been jailed for 19 months.
Drunken Assault
22 year old Alan Richardson and his friend were picked up by 71 year old taxi driver, Patrick Mullen, on the night of September 16th this year. Described as “extremely drunk” by Mr Mullen, the pair asked to be taken to Clarendon Road in Netherton.
On arrival, both Richardson and his friend got out of the vehicle. Mr Mullen rolled down his window ready for payment but instead was met with a knife to his neck.
“Richardson twice told the driver to give him money or he would kill him.”
The Trial
At Hamilton Sheriff Court Prosecutor, Paula Russell, said: “Richardson twice told the driver to give him money or he would kill him. Mr Mullen put the car into gear and was just taking off when he noticed Richardson had a knife which cut his right thumb.”
Mr Mullen’s quick thinking allowed him to escape with only minor injuries and he immediately radioed for help. He then made his way to Wishaw General Hospital where he received treatment for his wound. Richardson initially denied the allegations made by Mr Mullen but was forced to change his plea after the court played a voice recording from the car in which you can hear a male voice saying: “Give me all your money or you’ll die.”
Miss Russell added: “Richardson was traced and asked to account for his movements. He denied involvement but the recording was played and he admitted it was his voice.”
Sentence
Richardson’s defense lawyer said that he had been high on valium and was looking for money to buy more. He commented: “Richardson says his intention was to frighten the driver and he didn’t hurt him deliberately. The injury came about as the gentleman tried to drive away.”
Showing remorse for his actions, Richardson said: “That old boy didn’t deserve it.” Richardson was sentenced to 19 months in prison after pleading guilty to inflicting injury and permanent disfigurement to Mr Mullen with intent to rob.
