The Cabbie says hats off to Councillor Mark Hook, leader of Gosport Borough Council, for getting off his backside and spending a night observing a troublesome taxi rank.
Cabbies in Gosport, Portsmouth, had complained about trouble at the rank but felt no-one was listening to their protests. Now, after seeing a mix of violence and disorder at the popular night time rank next to the ferry pontoon, Cllr Hook is backing calls for tougher action in local ‘hotspots’.
Taxi Marshal Plan
Large numbers of people gather near the rank, particularly on weekend nights. However proposals for rank marshals which – as reported in – have worked well in other towns and cities were previously turned down.
Cllr Hook has said the idea should be looked at again and could be funded by the Gosport Community Safety Partnership, which includes the council, police, Hampshire Primary Care Trust and the fire service.
