Cabra Cabbie Nominated in the Best of Dublin Awards

A Dublin taxi driver is hoping to be crowned “Best Taxi Driver” in the 98FM Best of Dublin awards at the end of May.

57-year-old, Kevin Kelly, has been in the cab trade for over 34 years and despite joking that it “has its moments” he still enjoys being behind the wheel of his cab, meeting people from all walks of life.

He commented: “It’s a very enjoyable job. Most people you meet are sound. You get a buzz off of them.”

Brighten Your Day

Kevin was nominated by his daughter, Katrina Kelly, in recognition of his willingness to help the public and for his good sense of humor which brightens the day of anyone who uses his service.

Kevin prefers to focus on the airport jobs and leaves the more uncertain late-night shifts to the “younger lads” saying that he enjoys greeting visitors to the city as well as hearing the stories of those returning home.

“My customers often ask me for information on the city and I’m more than happy to tell them where the best places to go are and things like that.  I also only tend to be chatty if they want to be – in my eye, that’s the best way to be.”

Awards Ceremony

The dad of three was surprised to hear of his nomination and heard the news the traditional way.  He said: “I received a phone call because I don’t do Facebook or any of that.  Since then, I’ve had a lot of people mention it to me. It’s nice to be recognised.”

Kevin and his fellow nominees will be treated to a glamorous awards night at the 98FM Best of Dublin Awards ceremony, held in the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel on Burlington Road, where all the winners will be announced.
