Compassionate cabbies from Marsden Taxis have rallied round a 92 year-old pensioner mugged on a South Tyneside street.
South Shield’s Renee Hub – awarded an MBE for her decades of devoted volunteer service at the League of Friends shop in the local area – was chatting to a friend when a man snatched her bag containing cash, credit cards and photos of her great grandson and ran off.
Taxi Office Manager
After kind-hearted Marsden taxi office manager Kaye Whalen read about her ordeal in the Gazette, together with her colleagues she decided to do something to help.
Kaye Whalen told Cab Direct: “I recognised Renee from the local area as she lives just around the corner from our offices. We really wanted to do something to help.
“I knew we could never replace the photos of her great grandson but we organised a whip-round and bought her a new purse and handbag. I think she was really taken aback”.
Receiving the gifts at her South Shields home, Mrs Hub said: “I have been overwhelmed by people’s generosity. Since it happened, people have shown a huge amount of concern. I’m very grateful for what they have done and I’m very surprised. It’s lovely.”
Mrs Hubb’s bag was snatched around 2pm on Tuesday 11th September. The mugger scampered off towards Central Avenue in south Shields. He is described as being in his 20s and was wearing a light-coloured top and dark bottoms. Anyone with information should please contact the police on 03456 043 043 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
