Cabbies in Cambridge are being invited to voice their opinions on plans to change the layout of the St Andrew’s Street hackney taxi rank.
In a bid to relieve congestion and boost cyclist safety, Cambridgeshire County Council has plans to spend £30,000 on a new layout at the town centre cab rank. Cabbies, however, have concerns about a lack of rank space in the town centre, which they fear could be made worse if the rank redesign goes ahead.

The Council invited taxi drivers, cyclists, local business owners and bus operators to several meetings, where the new cab rank plan was discussed. An online consultation has now been released and members of the public can comment until March 22nd.
A spokesman for Cambridgeshire County Council said: “St Andrew’s Street is one of the busiest roads in Cambridge and used by a large number of buses, delivery vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and taxis. Due to its popularity, taxis sometimes queue on the road which has caused concerns over safety and congestion.”
At the moment, once the rank is full, taxis can queue back out onto the street. If the new plans are agreed, taxi drivers will no longer be allowed to do this and will have to wait in an over-spill area around the corner on Drummer Street until a space becomes available.
