Hackney taxi drivers in Bradford have taken it upon themselves to start wearing uniforms while on the job.
A group of cabbies who work on the Bradford Interchange rank thought they could do their bit to help portray a more professional image of the city and it was agreed that simple changes such as wearing matching shirts and ties would go a long way in helping.
The Man Behind the Idea
The idea was first suggested by Mohammed M Khan who says that all of his fellow cabbies have been more than happy with his proposal to smarten up.
He said: “We have a lot of business people, tourists and visitors coming into Bradford so we want to promote the city in a professional way.
“The drivers can’t wait to start wearing the uniforms. They all want to do the best they can for where they work and live. We hope other drivers will follow. We’ve managed to sort all this in just a few weeks.”
Council Support
The uniform will comprise of a white shirt, black tie and smart trousers. Clothing such as baseball caps will now be banned. It’s also thought that taxi associations in Glasgow and Edinburgh have sought advice from Bradford Drivers Association on how to introduce a similar scheme.
Councillor Imran Hussain, from Bradford City Council, commented: “Taxi drivers are some of the most hard-working people in our district and they provide a crucial front line service. They act as ambassadors for Bradford and this is something the Council would very much welcome and support.”
