A Bradford taxi driver has been recognised by West Yorkshire’s Chief Constable, Mark Gilmore, after he put his own life in danger when he made the quick decision to pursue a hit and run vehicle.
The Chase
On October 1st 2011, 39 year old, Andrew Simpson was knocked down as he crossed at Great Horton Road, Bradford, on his way home from a night out and died as a result of his injuries.
The culprit, Anees Asghar, was driving dangerously at a speed of 60mph in 30mph zone, in his Renault Megane, when he fatally struck Mr Simpson. He then turned the vehicle lights off and carried on driving.
As members of the public rushed to Mr Simpson’s aid, taxi driver, Imran Hussain, set off in search of the Megane. By the time he caught up with the vehicle; it was three miles from the scene of the crime and was in the process of being abandoned by three men.
Recognition for Brave Action
Mr Hussain was commended at a recent awards ceremony to recognise his quick thinking and heroic efforts that led to the arrest of Mr Asghar.
Chief Constable, Mark Gilmore, commented: “With no regard for his personal safety, Mr Hussain challenged the males and told them that they must return to the scene of the collision and take responsibility for what they had done.
“Mr Hussain followed them back to the scene and was present when the driver was arrested. The driver was convicted of several offences.
“The actions of Mr Hussain directly led to the early arrest of the offending driver and supported the securing and preserving of evidence that led to the offender being brought to justice.”
