Blyth Hybrid Taxi Firm Triumphs in UK awards

The UK’s largest electric and hybrid taxi firm swept the floor at three individual award ceremonies over the course of just a few weeks.

Phoenix Taxis in Blyth was taken over by young entrepreneur, 27-year-old Alex Hurst, in 2011 who has since trebled the company’s turnover, taking it from £1.6m to a whopping £4.2m.

Going Green with Hybrid Taxis

The eco-friendly taxi firm which is fully committed to reducing its carbon footprint has 40 hybrid taxis and 20 pure electric cars.

Managing Director, Alex, said: “In our business, being green isn’t something that’s mandatory, but it’s something that we feel passionate about and it’s important to us.

“Being green is about improving the environment, rather than purely business needs.

“This is just the start for us. We want to be totally electric by 2018.”

The Awards

Phoenix Taxis was presented with the Green Business of the Year award at the Northumberland Business Awards and also snapped up the Best Private Hire Company at the Professional Driver Quality, Service and Innovation (QSi) Awards.

Alex said: “I’m over the moon and very proud to have won these awards.

“We’ve won a lot of awards over the years but to win this hat-trick is really very special.”

To top it off the 27-year old was, very deservingly, awarded Young Entrepreneur of the Year at the first Federation of Small Businesses awards in the North East. Alex commented: “To be named young entrepreneur of the year is a true honour and privilege.”

Congratulations to Alex and all the staff at Phoenix Taxis!
