A taxi driver from Arnold in Nottinghamshire scooped a whopping £1 million in the EuroMillions last month.
On the 21st June, said to be longest day of the year, 63 year old cabbie Gordon Rees was on his way home from a shift when he stopped to buy a pint of milk at the Co-operative and, as a second thought, he bought two lucky dips.
A Lucky Day
Later that night, keen dominoes player, Gordon, won the weekly game in his local before winning £53 on the pub’s fruit machine.
Returning home, Gordon, checked his lucky lotto numbers soon realising that he’d won a seven-figure sum.
“Yes, it’s all matching. You’re a millionaire!”
Gordon said: “I don’t usually buy my lottery tickets from the Co-op but decided I may as well buy as I was there anyway.
“I checked the numbers on the TV around 11:30pm and could only see that I had one matching number. I then looked at the raffle code and noticed they all matched. I couldn’t believe it!
“I shouted to my daughter, Charlotte, who came downstairs to check the code too and she said, “Yes, it’s all matching. You’re a millionaire!” I couldn’t sleep and after lots of cups of tea I decided to go along to the taxi base to spend time with the rest of the lads.”
Dedicated to the Taxi Trade
Gordon plans to help his children financially as well as book a dream holiday to Mauritius. But Gordon isn’t ready to give up on the taxi trade just yet and plans to stay put in his cab for a while longer.
“I really enjoy my job so I think I’ll do another year or so.”
Gordon commented: “I really enjoy my job so I think I’ll do another year or so. I’m still speechless, money has always been very tight so this will take off a bit of the pressure.”
Gordon’s children, Charlotte, 19, and Oliver, 21, are both proud that their father has chosen to work on even after winning such a large sum of money.
Florist, Charlotte, said: “It was a surreal moment when we found out. I woke up the next day wondering if it was a dream – that’s what it feels like.
“I’m glad he’s going to carry on working. I wouldn’t want him to just drop everything. He’s always enjoyed his job, so it’ll keep him busy.”
