Barrow Borough Council has announced its plans to introduce a new taxi knowledge test for both hackney carriage and private hire drivers.
New Taxi Test
The new multiple choice test will focus on the drivers’ knowledge of the local area, disability awareness, vehicle maintenance, the Highway Code and numeracy skills.
The compulsory exam will apply to new license applicants as well as drivers who are looking to renew their license and, in both cases, a pass mark of 75% will need to be achieved.
Drivers will be allowed to sit the test three times. If they fail to pass their license will be revoked and they’ll have to wait at least six months to do a resit.
Trade Reaction
The reaction of the trade has been mixed. Some statements received by the council have been released.
Those for are saying:
“I think the idea of a knowledge test is a good one – it should have been introduced a long time ago.”
And:
“I think the test should be compulsory for all. Those coming into the trade should definitely have it and those already in it should know where they are going anyway.”
Those against are saying:
“I’m an ex-taxi driver and I have to say, the council officials are a joke. I don’t see why I should have to pay to prove that I can do my job after doing it for so many years.”
And:
“With regards to the testing of existing drivers, I do feel this would be a waste of time, resources and money.”
Decision
Council officers will discuss all comments at the licensing committee meeting on Wednesday the 19th of October.
