London taxi drivers and PCO-licensed drivers: navigating the move to plug-in hybrid and electric taxis

London taxi drivers and PCO-licensed drivers: navigating the move to plug-in hybrid and electric taxis

In recent years, the landscape of taxi and private hire driving in London and other major UK cities has evolved dramatically. And it doesn’t look like slowing down any time soon.

With the push for greener transport, evermore demanding emissions targets and rising fuel costs, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles have quickly become the only future-proof choice for cab drivers in the capital.

As regulations tighten, now’s the perfect time to make the switch from fossil-fuelled vehicles to plug-in hybrid or electric ones. The environmental benefits are already well established, so let’s look more closely at the financial side of things, and then explore some of the most popular electric options – all available from Cab Direct.

The clear financial benefits of going electric

One of the biggest incentives for London cab drivers and PCO-licensed private hire drivers to switch to plug-in hybrid or electric taxis is the significant fuel savings. Polluting vehicles are increasingly unpopular, and as the technology improves and the charging infrastructure expands, it’s becoming increasingly cost-efficient for London taxi and PCO-licensed drivers to flick the switch.

Avoiding Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charges

London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has become a key consideration for every driver in the capital. Petrol vehicles must meet Euro 4 standards, and diesel vehicles must meet Euro 6 standards, to avoid the £12.50 daily charge. It all adds up pretty quickly for those driving in central London regularly. When you realise that’s up to £87.50 a week, or £4,562.50 a year, the switch makes big financial sense – even against the investment you make in a greener vehicle.

Meanwhile, it’s hard to know when the restrictions on petrol and diesel vehicles will become even tighter than they currently are. Your current fossil-fuelled taxi might be compliant right now, but the phasing out is inevitable, and maybe sooner than you’re hoping. So now is a far more sensible time to future-proof your business than ‘sometime soon’. At the very least, it’s time to start looking at your options…

Electric vehicles are exempt from ULEZ charges, while vehicles that meet ULEZ criteria, such as Euro 6-compliant plug-in hybrids, can also benefit from exemptions or discounts depending on their age and emissions standards.

Fuel savings can transform your weekly earnings

Of course, electricity isn’t free, but it’s far cheaper than petrol or diesel, so the savings when switching to a fully electric vehicle are substantial – and electricity prices are far less volatile. Diesel and petrol costs continue to fluctuate, and when they go up, they almost never return to the level they were. At least not for very long.

In this respect, the savings are obvious. Electric vehicle charging is considerably cheaper, especially if you do it overnight at home, or during off-peak periods if you have a tariff that factors them in. And if you have solar panels, even better!

On average, a typical London taxi or private hire driver can save £100-£150 a week on fuel by switching from a diesel vehicle to an electric one that they charge at home. Even public rapid charging, which is slightly more expensive, remains way cheaper per mile than petrol or diesel.

Lower maintenance costs

The internal combustion engine (ICE) is way more complicated than an electric vehicle’s power train. There are far fewer moving parts, and less collateral damage when things go wrong, which is far less often. This means drastically reduced maintenance costs and much simpler servicing. There are no oil changes, for starters, and fewer brake replacements thanks to regenerative braking. By design alone, electric vehicles have fewer mechanical failures compared with ICE-powered cars, which is why many drivers report annual savings of over £1,000 in servicing and repair costs alone.

Range is no longer a worry

When electric vehicles were in their infancy, people were rightly concerned about how long their batteries would last. Even if there were charging points available, would their vehicle get from one to another? What if there was slow traffic, or a road closure and a detour?

Fortunately, thanks to vastly improved electric drivetrains and battery technology, that’s no longer a sticking point. It happens, but then people still run out of petrol and diesel! And paid charging stations are becoming as common as petrol pumps. They’re perhaps not as quick, but they’re infinitely better than they were.

Faster charging times…

Modern rapid chargers can add 80% battery capacity in as little as 30 minutes. This means drivers can top up their vehicle during a quick coffee break or lunch hour. Ultra-rapid chargers, operating at 100kW to 350kW, make it possible for compatible vehicles to secure hundreds of miles of range in less than half an hour.

…and more charging stations across the UK

Another lingering concern with electric vehicles has been the seeming lack of charging infrastructure and long charge times. Ten years ago, that was a fair comment, but things have changed significantly – especially in London and other UK major cities. The UK has made huge strides in expanding its charging network.

As of 30th June 2025, there were 82,369 electric vehicle charging points across the UK at 40,479 charging locations, with 110,486 EVSE and 116,910 connectors*. Meanwhile, dedicated taxi-charging points, exclusive to Black Cab and PCO-licensed drivers, have also been introduced in some London boroughs. Check out ZAPMAP’s continuously updated map of charging points across London and the rest of the UK to learn more.

At the same time, many drivers are installing home charging points and benefitting from cheaper electricity rates overnight. At time of writing, grants are available through the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) to reduce the upfront cost of installation.

So the outlook is good for anyone looking to invest in a greener and more compliant vehicle. With that in mind, let’s look at some of the best current options for London taxi and private hire drivers…
