Phoenix Taxis, based in Blyth, has expanded since its inception in 1990 to become Northumberland’s largest taxi firm. Even more impressive than the firms 200 strong fleet and 300 drivers, is the company’s innovative approach to its business – an ethos which saw them become the winner of the 2014 Professional Driver QSi Award for Best Private Hire Operator.
Winning Gold in their category, Phoenix beat off well known London luminaries due, in most part, to the strong business identity it has built up in the north. Specialising in sustainability, Phoenix operates the largest fleet of electric private hire vehicles in the UK. With a further 150 clean taxis to boot, founder Hugh Hurst’s son Alex is well placed to comment on the best vehicle for the job when it comes to hybrid options.
A Perfect Fit
Alex says: “Obviously our purchasing decision is limited to vehicles that fit with our sustainable model. That being said, there’s a fair bit of choice on the market these days.
“What drew me to the Hybrid Auris Touring initially was the cost and size of the vehicle – a combination which makes for the perfect taxi. The incredible boot space is really helpful for airport and train station runs. Plus, the ‘mod-cons’ on the car make it attractive to drivers too.
“It’s probably fairly unusual for most large fleet owners but my father and I still often drive during the rush hour period to help alleviate demand and we’ve both been really impressed by the car. Essentially, it’s similar to other hybrid options out there but comes in at up to £6,000 cheaper – you can’t say fairer than that!”
Comfort & Space
Alex continues: “The Auris Touring is one of the most comfortable cars we have on the fleet and it’s one of our drivers’ favourite choices to drive. It’s only beaten by far more expensive cars for fuel efficiency and is the best estate model car we have in terms of space.
“We took delivery of our first one from Cab Direct in January this year. Since then, we’ve had eight more. It’s definitely our taxi of choice. In terms of value for money, there’s no better option.”
Drive and Efficiency
With Auris, Toyota’s engine switches seamlessly between petrol and electric power for fuel-efficient driving and performance. Returning up to 76.3 mpg on the combined cycle and with no road tax to pay, the Hybrid Auris Touring is remarkably cheap to run.
Trim wise, there are two models to choose from Icon and Excel. The Icon comes with an impressive level of standard specification including alloy wheels, climate control, USB connectivity and front electric windows. Opt for the range-topping Excel model and you’ll also benefit from part-leather seats, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, lumbar support and more.
Taxi Trade Exclusive Savings
The good news for the taxi trade is that Cab Direct has teamed up with Toyota to offer drivers the chance to bag this money-saving estate with over £5,000 off the list price. All you have to do is provide proof of license.
Alex concluded: “I’d recommend the Auris Touring without hesitation. I’d equally recommend Cab Direct. They can’t be beaten on price for any Toyota Hybrid model and the delivery process is quicker and easier than all other suppliers we deal with. From the initial call into salesman Stuart through to taking delivery of the vehicles, the service has always been fantastic.”
