Sheffield Hallam University Union has joined forces with City Taxis to ensure that local students get home safely after a night out on the town.
Sheffield City Taxis cab drivers have agreed that they would much rather see Sheffield's students get a taxi direct to their door, even if they don’t have the full fare. The scheme is open to all registered students in Sheffield.
The Safe Taxi Scheme will permit undergraduates to leave their student card as a deposit, which they can reclaim later once they pay for the fare.
Welfare officer, Carl Hawkes, commented: “We think it’s much safer for our students to get a taxi home, even if they haven’t got enough money with them.
“We’re really pleased to be launching the scheme, working in collaboration with The University of Sheffield, to ensure all students studying in Sheffield can get a taxi driect to their home day or night.”
Sheffield university students have been given the number for City Taxis with instructions to call when they are stranded with no money to get home. It’s as simple as calling and quoting the scheme to the receptionist who will then send a taxi.
The Sheffield Student Safe Taxi Scheme will cover journeys up to 5.5 miles or up to the value of £10.00.
City Taxis manager Paul Gosney, added: “This scheme, in my opinion, is one of the strongest initiatives we have ever launched.
“Sheffield's students are an integral part to our business and we strive to provide them with the very best service. This scheme should bring an end to students’ safety being compromised when they run out of money, by knowing they can now get a taxi direct to their home using their student card.”
