Peugeot's all-new 508 is a sparkling replacement for the firm’s 407 and 607 models. With comfort and quality to the fore, it could quickly become a favourite with taxi drivers across the UK.
The Peugeot 508 comes in saloon and estate versions with a range of engine sizes and specifications.
The 508 has been designed from scratch. It offers interior space to match the old 607 and, although it is 10cm longer than the 407, it weighs around 35Kg less.
Some say the exterior styling has lost a little of the 407’s individuality. However, its longer rear passenger compartment makes the 508 spacious - important for those full taxi fares.
More importantly, when you’re a taxi driver spending long hours behind the wheel, the interior is quiet, comfortable and roomy. Wide use of high quality materials is accompanied by class-leading main switchgear.
Practicality is top of the list for most cab drivers and that’s where the Peugeot 508 estate version really delivers for the taxi trade. Its boot offers a bumper 660-litre load area, ideal for those hotel or airport runs.
Although a substantial car, steering is quick, precise and intuitive. And the Peugeot 508’s size means there’s plenty of head and legroom for passengers.
The standard 235/45R18 tyres offer good grip while it also offers a better balance than many front drive rivals.
The diesel engines fitted to the 508 are the stars of the show. Among the new range is a revised 1.6-litre HDi engine which is available with e-HDi technology. A big plus for taxi drivers with an eye on fuel efficiency, the e-HDi is an advanced stop-start system combined with an electronic sequential transmission.
Other new engines include a normally aspirated 120bhp 1.6-litre, a 156bhp turbocharged version, and a revised version of the 2.0-litre diesel.
There are five equipment grades. Entry-level models have daytime running lights, air conditioning, CD/radio and USB socket and steel wheels with eye-catching trims.
Going up a grade you can choose from Active, SR and Allure models, each of which adds its own step up in equipment, style and comfort.
In summary, the new Peugeot 508 is a welcome addition to the taxi market. It offers terrific space, an engaging drive, comfortable ride and outstanding cabin quality for those long shifts behind the wheel.
