At Cab Direct, we often hear tales of big hearted cabbies giving up their own time and energy in support of a good cause. This summer, we are delighted to sponsor Dave Neal, a taxi driver from Hinckley, near Coventry, who is undertaking a mammoth task in support of three fantastic UK charities.
This July Dave is swapping his cab for a 1973 Ford 3000 tractor in his bid to travel the entire coast of Britain – totalling over 7,000 miles! However, this isn’t the first time Dave, a farmer’s son, has taken to the road in a tractor to raise money. In 2008 he drove from John O’Groats to Land’s End covering a massive 1163 miles in 14 days to raise money for the Huntingtons Disease Association – a charity which is close to his heart.
Dave managed to raise over £6,000 during the course of his two week expedition last time round. However, this summer, with his monster tractor trip Dave is hoping to raise over £30,000 in support of McMillan Cancer Support, the Huntingtons Disease Association and Spinal Trust. Dave has already managed to raise a lot of money, including a £500 donation from Cab Direct who is sponoring the trip.
Dave comments: “I think it’s safe to say I’m the first person ever to undertake this challenge – I’ve already had a lot of support and I’m optimistic that we can raise a great sun of money for some very worthwhile causes.
Dave continues: “I have my own personal challenge to contend with too as a friend has offered to donate £1,000 if I manage to lose two stone along the way. I don’t know which will be harder,” chuckles Dave, “but I’m determined to achieve both.”
Help on Hand
Despite Dave’s trusted tractor being in great condition, there’s always the risk of breakdown. As such Dave will be supported by two friends who will follow him on route in a motor home stocked with parts. Dave will also be towing an eight foot long trailer which will double as his overnight accommodation – no doubt a welcome retreat after a day travelling Britain’s coastal roads by tractor.
Dave’s journey, which is expected to last over three months, will start on 15th of July from Hinckley taxi rank. Not surprisingly, the people of Hinckley are expected to be out in force to send Dave on his way.
